Is your wireless network protected?

Do you have a wireless computer network at home or at the office? If so, you may want to take a moment to consider if your network is adequately protected from intrusion. Even if you only use your computer for non-critical tasks, such as web browsing, or think that no sensitive information is stored on your computer, it is still a tempting target to a hacker if it is not well protected.

In a wired network, a computer must be physically connected via a network cable in order to get immediate access to other computers and devices. By contrast, in a wireless network, any computer within range of the wireless router or access point has an opportunity to access every computer and device in the network. For this reason, it is important that effective security barriers be implemented on each critical device in a wireless environment. This includes the wireless router or access point as well as each computer in the network.

Why would anyone want to get access to your computer? The obvious answer is that your computer may contain something worth stealing: credit card numbers, personal information that can be used in identity theft, passwords, etc. But even if you don't use your computer for any sensitive activity, the computer itself is an attractive target for criminals if it is not adequately protected. Once a hacker gains access to a computer, he can install and run malicious software that will allow him to control the computer remotely, all without the owner's knowledge. The compromised computer becomes a "zombie". Vast networks of zombies are used for a variety of objectionable activities, such as to send out viruses and spam, or to overload a targeted web sites by causing thousands of zombies to access it simultaneously, thus disabling the site ("denial of service" attacks).

So how do you protect your wireless network from intruders?
