Inserting Special Characters Faster in Microsoft Office

How many times have you tried to enter an ellipsis only to go back and count your periods and find either two or four, but never three? How many times have you tried to make an em dash, but received an en dash instead? Good news — this month's feature article is dedicated to providing predictable shortcuts for the special characters you use the most in Word.

AutoText entry ENTER (after you type the first few characters of the AutoText entry name and when the ScreenTip appears)

Inserting Special Characters using Character Codes

To use character codes, insert the Unicode character for the specified Unicode (hexadecimal) character code. For example, to insert the euro currency symbol, type 20AC and then hold down ALT and press X. You can also use the ANSI character for the specified ANSI (decimal) character code. For example, to insert the euro currency symbol, hold down ALT and press 0128 on the numeric keypad.
